Biography
Grant F. Winthrop and his wife, Hope, had three daughters attend Nightingale: Elizabeth '97, Fernanda '00, and Charlotte. He was nominated to Nightingale's Board of Directors in Fall 1986 and served for 18 years, 10 of those as Board President. Professionally, Winthrop started as a newspaper reporter and freelance writer in San Francisco before moving to the editorial staff of Fortune magazine from 1977 to 1981. He later worked as a private investor and a director of Wood, Struthers & Winthrop Management Corporation and of the Groton Land Co., Inc.

In 1984, based on a determination that Nightingale's archives were inadequate in revealing the school's history, Head of School Joan McMenamin and the Alumnae Association initiated an oral history project.
