 Person

Biography

Born in Philadelphia, Miss Clara Wade attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls and Bryn Mawr College, earning a European scholar award for a year of studying abroad at the University of Munich and in Rome. She returned to the States and Bryn Mawr and decided to temporarily take secondary school teaching work. Miss Wade ended up at Miss Nightingale's Classes in the fall of 1919 as a homeroom teacher, also teaching Latin, ancient history, medieval and English history, and coaching plays. She later taught French, Greek, and German to Nightingale students, as well.

Miss Wade became Mrs. Werner Boecklin in 1944, but was widowed just ten years later. She remained at Nightingale until retiring around 1962.

A Clara Wade Boecklin Room was dedicated in her honor by her students in 1969, when the school was reconfigured. She passed away in March 1970. Mrs. Boecklin left generous scholarship gifts to Nightingale in her will.
