Biography
John Robert Lewis was an American civil rights activist and politician. He participated in the Nashville sit-ins in 1960, the Freedom Rides, and was one of several leaders that organized the 1963 March on Washington. In 1965, Lewis led the first of three marches across the Edmund Pettus bridge from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, where he and other marchers were attacked by state troopers and police at the event later known as Bloody Sunday. In 1986, Lewis was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and served 17 terms, including several leadership roles. His awards include the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.
