"The Boarding School." Photocopy of article from Yearbook, 1929
Scope and Contents
Nightingale-Bamford School had a small boarding department, or "resident department," from 1929 until 1937. A handful of girls age 14 and older boarded during the week at 23 East 92nd Street, across the street from the schoolhouse, and typically returned home on weekends. Boarding students were typically from families living too far to commute to the schoolhouse daily but wishing for their daughters to take advantage of New York's cultural opportunities as part of their education. Miss Irene McArthur served as housemother. By the 1933-34 school year, economic conditions forced the remaining boarders to Miss Nightingale's apartment and the program eventually ceased being offered.
Records about the boarding department are few. In addition to the records in this series, other records such as school news publications, yearbooks, and school catalogs include information and reminiscences about the department.
