Biographical / Historical

In 1920 when the school first opened, Nightingale students utilized the playgrounds at Fifth Avenue and 102nd Street under the care of Miss Grace Yates, who was in charge of athletics and outdoor games for the school. Girls could partake in tennis, basketball, or field hockey in warmer months, and ice skating in the winter. Various sports and interschool athletic competitions were introduced in the following years.

Nightingale-Bamford School participates in the Athletic Association of Independent Schools of New York City, or AAIS of NYC, league. The AAIS league is a member of the New York State Association of Independent Schools Athletic Association, or "NYSAISAA," a sports association for independent schools in New York State. Each league sends its champion to the state competition, where NYSAISAA conducts championship competitions in various sports each year, some of which serve as qualifiers for overall state championships conducted with public and catholic schools.
