Biographical / Historical

Catherine Baldwin Woodbridge was born January 1, 1905. Her father, Charles Sears Baldwin was Professor of English at Barnard College from 1911 to 1935.

Mrs. Woodbridge graduated from Barnard College in 1927 and later served the school in many roles. Mrs. She was chairman of the Barnard College Alumnae Fund from 1942 to 1945, President of the Alumnae Association from 1954 to 1957, and a member of the Board of Trustees from 1954 to 1976.

In 1942, she taught at the Brearley School, then taught history and English at the Chapin School from 1943 until summer of 1958, when she joined the Nightingale-Bamford School as co-head of the school along with Mrs. Robillard, whose health was deteriorating.

She married Frederick J. Woodbridge, a partner in Adams and Woodbridge architects. His father, Frederick J.E. Woodbridge, served as Dean of the Graduate Faculties of Columbia University. They had two children, John and Jane. Mr. Woodbridge designed and oversaw construction of Nightingale schoolhouse addition in the late 1960s.

Mrs. Woodbridge served as head of school from 1958 to 1971. After her retirement, she served as interim eirector of the Brick Church Nursery School in 1975 and as director of the Searing School from 1977 to 1979.

Mrs. Woodbridge died on February 24, 1984.

In honor of Mrs. Woodbridge and her value of lifelong learning, the Catherine B. Woodbridge Fund for Faculty was created to further travel and study for Nightingale faculty.
