Vicary, Aline, 1908-1982
Biography
Miss Aline Vicary, born in Killingham, Kent, England on June 19, 1908, taught eighth grade at Nightingale-Bamford School from 1935 to June 1973 and also served as Head of Middle School. The 1965 Yearbook was dedicated to her. Miss Vicary was educated at the Gypsy Hill Training College in London and taught at Westmeads School in Whitstable, Kent, England. She came to the United States in 1929 and taught at the Dalton School prior to Nightingale.
Miss Vicary died May 13, 1982 in Bournemouth, England, where she had returned nine years prior. In addition to a memorial held at the school on June 9 that year, the Aline Vicary Memorial Fund was established to provide Middle School scholarships, and a Middle School English prize is awarded in her name each year at Honors Assembly. In 1992, two alumnae issued a challenge to name the seminar room in the new library the Aline Vicary Seminar Room.
