Index card file of Nightingale alumnae and former students, c. 1917 - 1982
Scope and Contents
This is an index card filing system of students of the Nightingale-Bamford School. It is separated into two systems, one for students who graduated from Nightingale, and one for students who attended Nightingale, but left prior to graduation. Each system is arranged alphabetically by students' surnames with dividers for each letter of the alphabet to ease searching. Index cards are typewritten with occasional handwritten annotations and include the name and birth date of the student, parents' names, address, telephone number, previous schools attended, and years of attendance and class levels at Nightingale. Cards for Nightingale graduates often include the track of study at Nightingale (when it was divided into General Education and College Preparatory tracks) and college attended following graduation. Some cards were updated after graduation and include details such as the former student's spouse and married name or profession. It is unknown when this filing system was initiated; there are cards for the earliest graduates of 1925, and one card indicates the student began studying with Miss Nightingale in 1917. Cards exist for graduates of the early 1980s, so this filing system likely ceased being updated around that time period. It is presumed that the information on these cards was used to build the first computerized alumnae database. There is a placemarker between two cards that reads, "SS PROJECT MARKER, DO NOT REMOVE," although the reference is unknown.
