United States bicentennial banner, 1976 spring
Scope and Contents
The General Student Work and Projects series includes representative essays, poetry, artwork, academic presentation programs, and compilations of student-created content. These consist of several cookbooks created by a grade-level or classroom of students, handmade science books, literary magazines created by Lower School classrooms, and scrapbooks of class trips and memories. Informal and formal publications of poetry are included, notably the 1995 and 1997 publications of "Poems for Life," in which students compiled responses from their letters to famous people requesting their favorite poems and why the poems inspire them.

Biographical / Historical
This bicentennial banner was conceived by Lower School social students teacher Carol Leckie and Lower School art teacher Katharine Kleber to commemmorate the 200th anniversary of the founding of the United States as an independent nation. With their teachers' assistance, Class III students (Class of 1985) created and sewed a design that symbolized an aspect of American colonial history or the colony's relationship with Great Britain at that time. The completed squares were assembled into a finished banner by Miss Kleber. The banner hung in the Junior Museum of the Metropolitan Museum of Art during the summer of 1976.
