Biographical / Historical

Basketball is one of the earliest sports played at Nightingale, as shown in a 1922 photograph of Nightingale students posing for a basketball team photograph. The 1925 yearbook mentions a "big basketball game" to be played on Field Day as well as a basketball exhibition for parents in the spring. Athletics were originally overseen by the school's Athletic Association at Miss Yates' Playground, where select athletics, such as field hockey, ice skating, basketball, tennis, and jumping were offered for intraschool play. A playground membership fee was required for participation in addition to school tuition.
