Biographical Note

Charlotte Elizabeth "Bettina" Rhett was born in New York City on July 25, 1914 to James and Elisabeth "Bettie" Rhett. Bettina's mother was the younger sister of Frances Nightingale, founder of the Nightingale-Bamford School. Both Bettina and her sister, Ellen, lived with their aunt Frances while attending the school, from which Bettina graduated in 1932.

In 1941, Bettina married Peter Borie. Bettina served with the Alumnae Association and Peter was a Nightingale Trustee for 17 years. Their two daughters, Ellen (Lendy) Borie'62 and Edith (Edie) Borie '60, also attended Nightingale. Bettina died in March 1960. A Middle School Cup for athletics was awarded for many years in memory of Bettina. In spring 1969, the Borie family endowed Nightingale's Bettina Rhett Borie Laboratory for science studies. On May 17, 1977, the school's Borie Laboratories for science were re-dedicated in honor of Bettina, Peter, and their daughter Lendy.
